How to Repair a Broken Garage Door Spring?

If you think you might have a broken garage door spring, the first thing you will want to do is to unplug the garage door opener if you have one. This will remove the risk of someone accidentally attempting to open the door with the broken spring. You should NEVER try to open the garage door if it has a broken spring. This could result in severe injury to yourself and further damage to the garage door and garage door opener. The next step is to examine and identify the type of spring system you have installed. Follow the instructions below to identify your current spring system:

Garage Door Torsion Spring System: If you have a torsion spring system, it will be mounted on a horizontal bar and located right above the garage door. You should see one or more springs mounted on this tube. Inspect to see if there are any breaks in the middle of the spring.

Garage Door Extension Spring System: If you have an extension spring system, it will be mounted on cables and located directly above the garage door horizontal tracks. You should see one or more springs mounted on each side, above the horizontal tracks . Inspect to see if there are any broken or detached springs.

Garage Door Torquemaster Spring System: Torquemaster is a spring system exclusively used with Wayne-Dalton Garage Doors. If you have a torquemaster spring system, it will be a horizontal bar located right above the garage door. You will not see any springs mounted on this tube. Unfortunately, there is no way to inspect for breaks in the middle of the springs since these are located inside the metal tube. If you have this spring system you may need to schedule a technician to inspect to ensure need of replacement.
