How do I add a feed to the client's feed library?

A new feed or forage may be added to a client's feed library by copying a feed from the standard feed library. These steps should be followed:

  • Use the Ingredient | Edit menu option to select the feed, or type of feed desired from the standard library.
  • Edit the feed name and other nutrient fields as necessary.
  • Use the "Save as" button and select a save destination on a client feed page.

  • How to use digestible NDF in DRS version 6.0

NRC 2001 allows the automatic calculation of ration energy. One component of the energy computation is energy associated with digestable NDF. The default DRS 6.0 computation uses the lignin/ndf ratio as an index of NDF digestibility. NRC 2001 also allows the use of measured 48hr NDF digestibility instead of the lignin/ndf ratio. DRS 6.0 can also use digestible NDF (DNDF).

To use DNFD it is necessary to add a DNDF field to the DRS nutrient system. The DRS user may go to the Utility/Nutrient definitions screen and overwrite an existing, unused nutrient field. The new nutrient name must be DNDF, the unit, %NDF, and decimal 2. After creating the nutrient field, the DRS user should go to the Ingredients/Change all option to zero out any existing values.

DRS 6.0 will compute an ingredient's energy value using lignin/ndf ratio if the DNDF value is zero.

<How do I add a nutrient to my results screen and reports?

An ingredient field may be added to or removed from the result screens and reports. The procedure is accessed from the Utility menu.

  • Use the Utility | Herd profile menu option.
  • From the Stored Profiles list select the animal type (milk cow, heifer, etc.) of interest.
  • Locate the desired nutrient field by scrolling through the list of nutrients.
  • To monitor a nutrient on the results screen, enter Yes into the Monitor column.
  • To show a nutrient in DRS reports, enter Yes into the Print column.
  • Click the OK button to save your changes.

  • How do I show nutrient values on a blend report?

As an option, nutrient profiles may be displayed when printing batch mix reports. The rules for which nutrient fields are displayed are controlled from your list of Custom Nutrient Profiles. Use the Utility | Custom nutrient profile menu option to set up your custom profiles.

How do I make Salt a nutrrient, or how do I create a new nutrient field?

DRS for Windows provides the capability to create new nutrient fields. For example salt be set up as a nutrient field in addition to being listed a nutrient. You control the new nutrients name, spelling, unit, and list order. Follow these steps:

  • From the Utility menu, select the Nutrient definitions option.
  • Referring to the column labeled "Active name", scroll until you locate a nutrient field you do not use. Since certain fields cannot be changed, you should look for items at the end of the list which may be shown as "<Blank>".
  • Change the entry in the "Active name" column to your nutrient's name, e.g., Salt.
  • Click on the adjoining field in the "Unit" column.
  • From the Unit list select the unit field need, e.g., for Salt select 1 - %
  • Enter a number in the Decimal column to control the decimal precision for displaying the nutrient.
  • In the ListOrder column enter a number between 1 and 75 signifying where the nutrient should appear in the list of nutrient on the result screens and reports. (Look at the ListOrder number of other nutrient fields to help you find the desired location.)
  • Click the OK button to save your changes.

Note that once a nutrient field has been defined, you must update the Standard and client feed library nutrient values to reflect your change. Use the Ingredients | Change all menu option to make these changes most quickly.

  • How do I move DRS to a different computer?

The simplest procedure for moving DRS to a different computer is install an evaluation copy of DRS onto the new computer and then restore the old DRS data files on the new computer. Follow these steps:

  • Using an internet connection, download a copy of the DRS evaluation program on the new computer. Install the program and then run it to insure the installation was successful.
  • On the old computer use the DRS for Window Backup/Restore utility to backup up your existing data files. Use the Start | Programs | DRS for Windows menu option to find the Backup/Restore utility.
  • On the new computer use the DRS for Windows Backup/Restore utility to restore your data files.

  • How do I correct display problems on WinXP/Vista computers?

Computers using WinXP/Vista may encounter display problems. The following suggestions are offered as a means to resolve these problems. Follow these steps:

  • 1. Go to Start | Control Panel | Display option. On "Themes" tab select the "Windows classic" theme. On the "Settings" tab set the display to approximately ~1200 X ~700-800 resolution. Or,
  • 2. Right click the Desktop DRS for Windows icon, and select the "Properties" option. Select the "Compatiblity" option and select the option to use of the 640 X 400 display resolution. If there are still display problems, change to the "Windows classic" theme as desribed in 1.
  • 3. Exceptionally large fonts may be encountered. Go to the Windows help system, and locate the adjust font size topic. From that screen select the option to use "small" fonts, that is, 96 dpi font size.

  • I cannot send DRS email to clients (AOL subscribers).

AOL subscribers will not be able to send email directly to clients. This is because AOL has a proprietary email system. Generic email programs, such as DRS, cannot access it. To work around the problem you may copy the DRS email text and copy the text into an AOL email message for the client. Follow these steps:

  • Prepare your DRS email report documents while printing client reports.
  • After all reports are prepared, go to the Report Options menu and select the Email reports option.
  • On the email reports page, press the Notebook appearing button to copy the report text to the clipboard.
  • Create a new message in AOL to your client. Paste the clipboard into the body of the email text.
  • Send the AOL email message. Pasting is accomplished by setting your cursor into the text area of the email message and pressing the control V key combination <Ctrl><V>.

Note that text formating may not appear correctly to your clients. This can happen for two reason. (1) You have not set up you AOL email settings to use the correct type font. You should use the Courier New font for best effect, (2) your client has not set up his email program to use the proper font. He should also use Courier new.

  • I cannot find my email SMTP server. Windows version issues.
The SMTP server is a system your ISP provides to process your outgoing email messages. Typical names are mail.yourISP.net, smtp.yourISP.com, etc. Unfortunately because of the large range of email programs, web browsers, and Windows versions in use, there is no easy way to guarantee that you will find the answer on your computer. Windows Vista and Windows 7 Home versions may not work. From the desktop DRS icon, right click, go to Compatibility tag, and select Windows XP compatibility mode.

The easiest way to find the server name is to call your ISP and ask, or send an email to their technical support group and ask.
